Week One

Imagine - amazing African scenery, animals running, the sun shinning. All the things that you can wish to see in the African lands are there. Well this is what I was imagining as all, cause 2 hours out of Nairobi on the first day of our trip it rained like nothing I have ever seen before. I am not just talking about it pissing down - I am talking about the sky opening and the contents of Niagara Falls tipping on our truck. There was a bit of blue skies in the distance, but it never made it to us, so the first night of bush camping in a game park was canned and we spent about 12 hours on the truck on the worst roads ever with pot wholes that could fit a car getting to the next campsite, only to have to put up tents in the cold and the dark. NOT what I thought of when I was planning this trip. Nevertheless, the sun has come out (I already have a bit of sun burn to prove it) and we have seen lots anyway and to be fair it is only the first week one of many that I will have a chance to see things.

We are now in Uganda having come through Kenya quite quick due to the weather changing the plans and we just spent 3 days at the base of the Nile. some people when white water rafting, but sadly I am a total chicken and was not going to brave the level 5 rapids. I am glad I didn't cause I saw the video and it was insane. It then pissed rain again in the night and out tent got soaked, it seemed to have a few leaks and it also had a river of water under it at one point, which was like sleeping on a water bed. Crazy African weather, but I guess it is to be expected so close to the equator. Spent yesterday doing Volunteer work with Soft Power - spending sometime with the kids (I know what you are thinking, I hate them too, but the kids over here are so different and gorgeously innocent, you can't help but love them) and then we spent the arvo painting one of the buildings in the school that they have built. It was a really great day.

Today we are in Kampala and heading to the base camp for the Gorilla trek which I am really excited about. The people on the Truck are all great bar one loud, obnoxious woman, but there are only 14 of us, so in 2 weeks when we get back down to Nairobi, we lose some and gain some to bring the number up to 22, so the truck will be a bit crowded. Looking forward to the new people though, and the gorillas, as all we have really seen so far have been baboons.

Will update again after Gorilla trek. Having a ball except for the rain and can't help but cringe at the thought of another 58 days in a tent, but that's what I signed up for.
